Eco tourism is an important source of income for Rwanda. The Virunga Mountains border the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mt Karasimbi, the smaller of the two volcanoes depicted, is home to the famous mountain gorillas. The recent fighting in the DRC disrupted this stream of foreign currency, but tourists are now starting to return.
CRS is involved in peace and justice concerns in every country where it is present. It does not take political sides but always is in solidarity with the victims. The scars of the horrific Rwanda genocide in 1994 and the civil war that precluded this event are a challenge for Rwanda today. It is a society that is struggling to get beyond the past.
